Dr. Joseph Schulman, President and Chief Scientist of the Alfred Mann
Foundation.
The Foundation is a non-profit research organization devoted to
development of advanced medical products in a variety of fields.
Education
B. S. in Applied Physics (Major: Spectroscopy) University of California, Los Angeles,
Ph.D. in Zoology (Major: Neurophysiology; Minor: Genetics) University of California, Los Angeles,
Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern
California, Los Angeles in an advisory capacity.
Intellectual Contributions
Dr. Schulman developed or initiated development of many leading edge medical products which have enable patients to assume more normal activities and return to an improved quality of life.
The first reliable rechargeable cardiac pacemaker with bi-directional telemetry
Initiated research on the implantable drug delivery system
Developed the implantable long-term glucose sensor
Developed the cochlear implant with bi-directional telemetry with analog and digital strategies
Developed an injectable neural-muscular stimulator to restore function to impaired limbs and body organs
Initial development of the artificial retina leading to the creation of the company Second Sight
Developed sub-miniature rechargeable lithium ion batteries for medical applications.
This technology led to the creation of Quallion company.
Dr. Schulman holds in excess of 40 patents and has authored many scientific, biomedical and engineering papers, posters and presentations.
Corporate Experience
Prior to joining the Foundation in 1985, Dr. Schulman served as
Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Scientist for
Pacesetter®Systems, Inc.
Prior Vice President of Advanced Research and Chief Scientist for MiniMed®, Inc.,
Prior President of Neurodyne Corporation.
Before joining Pacesetter in 1969, and entering into the medical technology
field, Dr. Schulman served in several scientific positions at Bell Telephone,
Litton Industries and North American Aviation.
